Friday Fun Night: Foods That Reflect Your Roots
May’s Friday Fun Night reminded us once again that the people of TUMC know how to cook — and even more, how to love one another through food and fellowship. What began as a simple theme, “Foods that Reflect Your Roots,” turned into an evening rich with stories, heritage, and the kind of laughter that lingers long after the plates are cleared. Around the tables, we learned things we never knew. We heard the sweet story of how peaches brought two families together long before their children would one day meet and marry. We discovered shared German roots among one couple, and we confirmed — with great enthusiasm — that Owensboro baked beans really are the best. We even learned that flat rice is a thing, and that peach cobbler, chocolate brownies, and ice cream are a trio that belongs together. The meal itself was a tapestry of traditions. Fresh-from-the-garden kale greens cooked country‑style, a kettle of beans, Kentucky originals like benedictine sandwiches and Hot Browns (casserole style), and a parade of casseroles that could have filled a cookbook: Washington County vegetable casserole, German sauerkraut–sausage–potato casserole, broccoli and cheese casserole, hash brown casserole, and an Indian flat rice dish. For the first time in Friday Fun Night history, the main dishes outnumbered the desserts — and no one complained. We ate well, but more importantly, we lingered. Conversations stretched longer than usual. People leaned in, shared memories, swapped recipes, and told stories of where they came from and who shaped them. It was one of those evenings that reminds us why fellowship matters: because time spent together strengthens the ties that make us a church family. As always, the food was wonderful — but the company was the true blessing.
